I am glad someone else thinks like I do! Whew~ I shared this on facebook. I do have disbudded goats in my pasture but I bought them that way~and yes it is my lamancha doe~her offspring has horns. I raise primarily pygmy and they all have horns as well. A goat usually learns how to 'unstuck' their head from a fence as I have seen. Also,it helps to use proper goat fence which the holes are to small for an adult head to go through. Yes, handy for tilting the head to drench and whatnot~so many ppl think it is cruel when I do this. The goat doesn't struggle at all the pygmy is between my legs so I can hold the body with my legs and I tilt head and there you have it!

Hi Carol, thank you for your reply. I haven't tried either form of azomite. It was what I was researching when I found your blog. After debating with myself, I decided to order the powder, because it seems a lot of goat owners use that. I was concerned it was too fine, but then I figured so is baking soda and they do okay with that. :)

We actually have to leave the horns intact to show in the ABGA. It's part of the breed standards. In our 4H shows though it doesn't matter. You can go either way.

Finally, someone advocating horns on goats. We have 7 children and I grow weary of people condemning me for not making the 'responsible' choice (of burning my infant goats head and thus endangering my goats immune system so I can be an irresponsible mother and let my children play with our goats unsupervised) err.. I mean the responsible choice of disbudding, haha!!

Seriously, I don't think children should handle farm animals, or even pets... without an adult nearby. As for shows, I hope one day there are shows for those of us who wish to give our goats a healthier start on life by not disbudding. Thank you for your post!!

I got recently the opportunity of having fresh goat cheese every week. I have an IBD. After a short while I discover that I feel really better. So, now, I eat fresh goat cheese once a day. It seems to be sufficient to obtain an immediate benefit on IBD. The studies described seems to be unknown in France. IBD medecine specialist don't recommend goat milk or fresh goat cheese.

I've also decided to not dis-bud or dehorn. Natural horns are gorgeous :)
It's amazing though, when looking at farm/livestock forums online.. how fervently people feel about the issue. One woman really got chewed out for recommending to a poster to let her goats be "all natural."
So it has really surprised me what a heated topic this is.... it is great to see more people supporting all natural goats :)

I have never had behavior issues with my horned and un-horned goats!
(though for the record I have known a few pushy and mean goats.. it's all in how you raise them!) :)
